Who is MelaGodo and What is Their Story?

We are a very small, family-run farm. Historically dedicated for three generations to the heroic cultivation of apples on high-altitude terraces, in the 2000s we decided to embark on an innovative path, transforming the raw material into a high-quality sparkling cider.

The idea arose from the desire to combine two typical traditions of our Valtellina: wine and apples. The product name “Melagodo” represents the life philosophy of the company members who, once seated at the table, can enjoy the fruit of the hard work behind the production of this sparkling cider, which is made entirely by hand but ultimately gives immense satisfaction once in the glass and can be shared with friends and customers.

What Are the Characteristics of “Sparkling Cider” and How Is It Different from Other Types of Cider?

The main difference lies in the production process. Melagodo sparkling cider is produced using the traditional method, which requires double fermentation, one of which is in the bottle.

Melagodo cider is produced in two versions: in the “brut” version, the cider rests on the lees for at least three years before disgorging, while in the “extra dry” version, the cider remains on the lees for at least two years before disgorging.

This gives the product a completely natural perlage without added carbon dioxide, as often happens in the production of classic cider. Our production process also ensures a product with structured and clean olfactory and gustatory characteristics.

Which Apples Do You Use to Produce It?

We use table apples, including:

  • Golden
  • Stark
  • Granny Smith
  • Renette
  • Quince
  • Gala
  • Ancient varieties found in our orchards.

How Is Your Cider Received Nationally and Internationally?

Nationally, our product is sold in various wine shops, restaurants (including Michelin-starred ones), and shops. Internationally, Melagodo has won several awards, including the prestigious Cider World in Frankfurt:

  • CIDER WORLD 2019 – Frankfurt: Gold Medal 2019
  • CIDER WORLD 2018 – Frankfurt: Bronze Medal 2018

How Do You See the Cider Market Today?

It is evolving compared to a few years ago. Today, more and more consumers are curious and aware of this beverage.

Is There Room for Innovations and to “Reinvent Cider” in a Modern Key?

Absolutely yes, ours is already a reinterpretation, as a few years ago it was inconceivable to make cider with common table apples. We are working on new projects because the world of cider allows us to “play” with raw materials as long as they are of quality (in our vision) to combine them into new products. Cider has the freedom of beer experimentation with the elegance and charm of wine.

Is Cider a Niche Beverage in a Country Like Italy Where Wine Dominates?

Currently, yes, but we hope a culture of this beverage will spread so it can become for everyone.
