Hot Apple Cider: How to Make Mulled Cider
Marusca
Hot apple cider, also known as mulled cider, is a perfect beverage for the colder months of the year. There are two main recipes: one includes alcohol, and the other is non-alcoholic, making it suitable for children. Among the many cider recipes, the hot version is undoubtedly a favorite for many cider lovers.
How to Make Non-Alcoholic Hot Apple Cider
Non-alcoholic hot apple cider is simple to make, delicious, and suitable for the whole family. Unlike the alcoholic version, there is no waiting time. Therefore, you can enjoy this beverage immediately after making it.
Ingredients
- 700 grams of apples
- 100 ml of water
- One orange
- One lemon
- 50 grams of sugar
- Two cloves
- One cinnamon stick
Procedure
Buy apples of your preferred type. You can choose, for example, red apples, granny smiths, or quince apples. The difference between varieties will inevitably influence the sweetness of your hot apple cider. Peel the apples and remove the core. Put them in a juicer to extract the apple juice. Once you have the juice, pour it into a large enough pot to contain it all. Add:
- Orange and lemon zest
- Sugar
- Cloves
- A slice of ginger
- A cinnamon stick Bring everything to a boil and let it simmer on low heat for 10 minutes. Remove the zest and cinnamon stick from the cider and serve it as is.
How to Make Mulled Cider, Alcoholic Version
Here’s how to prepare mulled cider in its alcoholic version. One advantage of this beverage is that the alcohol content can be very low, depending on how long you let it ferment. Thus, it is suitable even for those who do not like overly alcoholic drinks.
Ingredients
- 1 kg of apples
- 100 grams of sugar
- 70 ml of water
- One orange
- One lemon
- A slice of fresh ginger
- Two cloves
- One cinnamon stick
- 6 grams of brewer’s yeast
Tools
- Fermentation cap
Procedure
As before, choose the apples you prefer. The amount of sugar can vary depending on the desired alcohol content. For example, with 100 grams of sugar, you get an alcohol content of 8%.
If you decrease it, the alcohol content will be lower; if you increase it, the alcohol content will rise. You can also omit the sugar, and in this case, the alcohol content will not exceed 5%.
Peel the apples, remove the core, and extract the juice using a juicer or centrifuge. Now put the water in a small pot and warm it slightly to dissolve the yeast. Add the water with the yeast, citrus zest and juice, cinnamon stick, sugar, and cloves to the apple juice.
Pour the juice into a bottle and seal it with a fermentation cap. Let it ferment for 20 days, shaking it gently from time to time. Bottle it and seal it with a sparkling wine stopper. Serve it hot on occasion and store it for no more than a month.
